Since the source was Japanese R2, no subtitles or English dubtrack were available, so we needed some Japanese translators. The firs one which encouraged me to start the project soon dropped off the face of earth without warning, leaving us pretty much stranded for quite a while. Eventually, jfs and Wlah gracefully offered to take over, and maxx- soon also joined our translation team - so we could revive it and get to work. Since Matroska supports multiple subtitle tracks in multiple formats, we decided to ask for many different language translators which might be interested in participating, so that this fansub becomes interesting for lots of different people which are not as experienced in English as their native tongue. In the end, 12 different languages found the necessary volunteers, which is quite a list (and a hell to manage). I can say for sure that after experiencing the ... joy ... of managing a group of more than 15 volunteers is quite a treat. I definitely gained alot of respect for fansub groups in the past weeks. It makes all video and audio encoding feel so trivial ;) Well, except for some minor YATTA work the video was very easy to tame. The only real challenge was to find filter chains to help deal with the codec-killing dark scenes in Tsukihime. MPEG-4-based codecs do not particularly enjoy dark green on grey on black, so it was quite problematic not to have the codec block out the frames in the dark. In the end, the good old Spatial Smoother trick with his dithering effect allowed me to shape and sharpen the frames enough to dig out some contrasts and keep it watchable. Enough talk, time to watch a good anime. Enjoy!
