Zhentarim DivX - Par2 Guide
Small par2 guide version 2
Par2 files can be used to fix broken and corrupt files much
like zidrav except that you don't need to have a specific
patch made that only you can use. This makes it a lot easier
to handle and distribute but it comes with the limitation
that you can only fix as many blocks with errors in a file
that premade par2 files exist for. In this case it's 5% of
the total filesize.
For applying par2 files on windows quickpar
(http://www.quickpar.org.uk) is recommended and for
everything else you can get the source from the official
par2 site (http://parchive.sf.net).
If you know that your file is broken you need to get one
corresponding par2 file to figure out how many blocks you
need. Any par2 will do but getting the smallest one is
recommended. Opening the par2 file in quickpar will either
fix the file if enough blocks are available or tell you how
many more blocks you need.
The filenames are in the format name.volX+Y.par2 where Y
represents how many blocks are in that file and X is not
important for patching. The file without X and Y values can
only be used to figure out how many blocks you need and
nothing else.
Filename examples:
zx.voices.of.a.distant.star.par2 - contains no recovery
information, can only be used to check files and know how
many blocks are required.
zx.voices.of.a.distant.star.vol00+1.par2 - contains one block
(00 is completely irrelevant for patching).
zx.voices.of.a.distant.star.vol07+8.par2 - 8 blocks
